People often forget that she has been in martial arts classes since she was five. She has a black belt in Taekwondo. She had full athletic scholarship for tennis and track; she still actually regularly plays tennis at the country club. There is a gray, oversized armchair in her living room; that is her favorite place in her house, she frequently reads on it. She drives a black 2007 Land Rover that her dad bought for her when she was turning 16.
The Adams Family
"My family is complicated. I can't tell you I've ever been close to anyone besides my brother. My sister irritates the shit out of me. My mother and I have always bumped heads. She expected me to be like my sister. Graceful, feminine, practically raised to be a darling socialite. I had no interest in that. She's the complete opposite of me. My brother is probably the one family member that I've actually had a relationship with - maintained a relationship with, I should say. I used to be close to my Dad.. but he told me a bunch of lies and I haven't spoken to him since I found out the truth."
MOM: Mollie's mother was overbearing throughout Mollie's childhood and adolescence. She would constantly criticize her over the way she dressed, the way she spoke, the way she carried herself. It was as if she were the owner of a boarding school for girls. But Andrea was also one of the most manipulative people on the planet, and that was a source of a lot of tension between the two of them. It only got worse when Andrea finally decided to reveal to Mollie (at 17) that the man she'd been calling father her entire life wasn't her biological dad. Don's brother is, in fact, Mollie's biological father.
"DAD:" It wasn't because he gave her everything she asked for. She really didn't ask for much. She was, and is, low maintenance. They connected over their love of similar music, playing tennis and having lunches at the club. In a house with two women she didn't feel she fit in with, she found solace in the fact that her and her father and brother could connect over those things. Mollie blamed her mom for the secret of her real dad. The revelation drove her parents apart, and her mother moved out to a condo in LA. Mollie hasn't spoken to her since. It was nice to her only having her Dad and brother, and rarely her sister, in the house. Her father continued his illegal activities until Mollie, going through his office one day, stumbled upon some letters and documents that were hard to ignore. She didn't do anything with them, she simply let her relationship with her father disintegrate until there was nothing left of it, and the only person she spoke to anymore was her brother. Her Dad got picked up after the divorce was final (When Mollie was twenty-one).
half-BROTHER: He's so laid back that naturally Mollie felt more drawn to him than to the others in her family. He had issues of his own, for a while he even volunteered to do work for his dad. Naturally, this pissed her off, it drove a wedge between them, but when her Dad got picked up, he realized the error of his ways. He spent a lot of time and effort fixing the relationship between himself and Mollie, and they got close again before he decided to shack up with one of Mollie's high school friends and moved to San Diego with her. They still talk, and she still uses her favorite gift from him - her noise cancelling headphones. He's the only one who ever really got her.
half-SISTER: The opposite of Mollie and her brother. Her sister adores the spotlight, she loved being the princess, did anything she could to get what she wanted. she was so similar to their mother that Mollie couldn't stand either of the women in the house. She and her sister constantly bickered, and still do, now that they share the house their parents left them in. the neighbors constantly complain about overhearing their arguments.
Get By With A Little Help From My Friends
Mollie is not one for talking. She does not delight in small talk - and she is not very articulate when it comes to her thoughts or feelings. Instead of fumbling over her words like an idiot, she takes a direct approach to everything. Even when/if that means that she had to admit she doesn't know something. (Most frequently used in reference to her emotions (e.g. "I don't know how that makes me feel. I don't know what I'm feeling right now... I'm just annoyed") She's jaded, guarded, distant, and most definitely an introvert. She can be a bit weird once you actually get to know her, once she's comfortable with you. But up until you reach that point, she's probably the quiet people watcher in the room - or the person who never comes to the room at all. She's more than okay with being alone. Her bluntness gets her mistaken for rude, which just enforces her belief that she should spend more time alone than with other people. Social events and situations leave her physically and mentally drained, but she's working on it.
Luckily for her, she's found a few people in her life who have been able to put up with, and even relate to her.
Kirsten: The BFF - Kirsten has always been, and always will be there for her. She and Mollie are similar creatures - they enjoy their solitude, and privacy, and making fun of stupid people together. Frequently, they will stay in, get drunk, and watch dumb horror movies that make them laugh.
Lenny: The Mean one - Lenny and Mollie bonded over their shared irritation with stupidity. Lenny frequently makes Mollie laugh with her mean comments, her I-don't-give-a-shit attitude. It's one of the only people she's ever met in her life that can deal with, and dish right back, the bluntness that Mollie hands out on a regular basis.
Addison: The nice one - Quite possibly the person that keeps her grounded. Between Kirsten and Lenny, Mollie could have become more withdrawn, or downright mean if she chose to. Addison was always there to be a good influence on her. She was honest, kind, caring. It was something that Mollie didn't find in the other people in her life, something she realized she needed. She's Mollie's opposite.
Stu: The chill one - Someone for Mollie to relax with, be honest with, share random thoughts. He's about as low maintenance as she is, the two of them don't need to be doing anything particularly engaging to enjoy being around each other. One of the easiest friendships she's had to upkeep in her life.
Must Be Love On The Brain
"I've been in love before. I"m starting to think that maybe it's something you only get one or two chances at. I don't think people can be so lucky as to find that passion with so many people. As far as I'm concerned, I'm gonna be alone for the rest of my life. That's about all I have to say on the matter."
Love has never been an easy thing for Mollie. Possibly because she's so guarded. Her first love was her best friend in high school... who she slept with one night he showed up in her room during junior year, broken hearted and vulnerable. Naturally she couldn't say no... unfortunately for her it was a one-night thing for him. He began dating the queen bee, causing a lot of tension between her and Mollie - which made high school even worse for her than it already had been.
JJ was trial and error. They never really were on the same page, both of them demanding in their own ways, stubborn. They couldn't get it straight. It was all passion and fire, and ended up being too much for the both of them. J had other things going on for him at the time, too. His own drama with his best friend - eventually the two of them just ... fell apart. Her family wondered what happened to him, they had loved him, he was a family friend. She never gave them an answer, she refused to talk about it.
The third boy she dated was a Russian kid, new to Ashwick as she finished up her senior year. He was part of an underground fighting ring, and she began hanging around that crew as a result of her time with him. Things were good, he understood her anti-social, morbid self. But he didn't seem to understand or care about typical relationship things... like not hanging out with other women, getting drunk and hooking up with them. It ended quickly, without much remorse on mollie's side, because anger is the emotion she is most frequently in touch with.
It was a year before she bothered trying to date again. She spent most of her free time with her best friend, or by herself. She would run every day, focus on school, go play tennis afterwards. Until she met TJ at the gym. He was friendly, honest, slightly angsty. He was different than the other two, and the two of them got involved and fell fast and hard. He moved into her home within months, the two of them happy. Problems arose when J came back into her life - showing up at her house, approaching her on the streets when he saw her. There was a rekindling of fire one night. He made his move, and Mollie wasn't one hundred percent sure that she'd hated it. She ended up pushing him away right before things could get too serious, which led to their final fight with each other. She wouldn't see J for a few more years. At the young age of twenty-one, Mollie was settled with a man she truly loved, and a guilt complex that not even Vodka induced inebriation could remedy. A drunken night between the two of them led to a stupid decision. The next morning they woke up married - and decided to make the most of it. They loved each other, after all. A few weeks of matrimonial bliss passed, and her secret was revealed. TJ wanted to fight about it - Mollie did not. She wanted to be forgiven, she hadn't let anything serious happen. The fight was too much for her, she imagined his anger would lead to her losing him... so before he could leave... she did.
She spent the next year in Connecticut with her mother's sister. She visited her friend Addison in New York, coincidentally she lived out there around the same time. She needed the break. And when she returned to her home town a year later, one of the first people she saw was TJ. It was like getting hit in the gut. She went to several meals to him, talking to him, explaining herself and trying to see where it left them. Eventually, there was a divorce, though it hurt the both of them. He had moved on with his life in that time, he was expecting a child with someone else. There was no room for her in his life anymore.
Since the age of twenty-two, Mollie has attempted (and failed miserably) at dating somewhere around five guys. One she went on a backpacking trip with for six months, and he was the closest thing to a real relationship she could have expected for herself, with her luck. but he would disappear just like the rest of them. One of the nights on their trip had led to talking about life choices, career paths, deepest desires. They shared one deep passionate night before returning and she will forever credit him with helping her make the choice to pursue law, which she'd already started school for and taken a hiatus from to go on this trip.
Now she is regularly bothered by her neighbor, Damon Beckett. Who seems to think he is god's gift to humanity and is so determined that Mollie will give in and sleep with him one of these days. She's determined to never let it happen.
You Don't Gotta Go To Work
"I'm currently working at Bhanger & Leev, as an intern. I get them their coffee, take out their trash, take notes in meetings, and pretty much all the dirty work that Monica Leev wants me to. It's not particularly enjoyable, but it's a necessary step to take to get where I actually want to be. I can put it up with it for at least that long."
After her hiatus came to an end, she returned to school, hyper-focusing on her desired career path, and ultimately landing with an internship at Bhanger & Leev lawfirm. Ideally, she'd like to go to the Schwarz firm, once her internship has come to its end, because she cannot stand the woman she works for now.
Although she thanks Andrew for helping her finalize her career choice, the reason she decided to go into criminal law was because of her father's illegal activity. She likes to think of most things as black and white, and her father lived firmly in the black. Breaking the law wasn't something she would ever condone, and though she couldn't change what her father had done, she could at least play a big role in getting people like him off the streets. Short of becoming a masked vigilante, this was the only way she felt she actually could make a difference.
Her faith in humanity is nonexistent. It's a major reason she is as antisocial and withdrawn as she is. She fully believes that people are selfish and/or stupid... and she probably wouldn't waste her time on someone unless they proved otherwise.
